Zuni Icosahedron

ZUNI is a colour between blue and green. In Western New Mexico, Zuni is the name of a tribe of North American Indians who is famous for creative handicrafts. ICOSAHEDRON is a solid figure having twenty faces bearing a strong contagious character.

Founded in 1982, is a Hong Kong based international experimental theatre company and a non-profit charitable cultural organization. Zuni is one of the nine major professional performing arts companies in Hong Kong, and has made venue partner with the Hong Kong Cultural Centre since 2009.

As a premier experimental theatre company, Zuni has produced more than 200 original productions of alternative theatre and multimedia performances, and been invited to more than 80 cities around the globe for cultural exchange and performances.

With the support of our members, and under the leadership of Co-Artistic Directors, Danny Yung and Mathias Woo, Zuni has been active in video, sound experimentation and installation arts, as well as in the area of arts education, arts criticism, cultural policy research and international cultural exchange. Recently, Zuni has also been undertaking the mission of preserving and developing Intangible Cultural Heritage (Performing Arts).

With “Reinterpret Classics”, “Reinvent Tradition”, “Recreate Theatre and Media Technology” and “Reconnect Theatre with Social Movement” as our major artistic directions, Zuni has been most inspiring in developing the aesthetics of theatre in Chinese society, with its experimental and subversive nature.

Mathias Woo

Director, Arts Tech Installation Design

As the co-artistic Director cum Executive Director of Zuni Icosahedron, Mathias Woo leads a career as a scriptwriter, director, producer as well as curator. His works con-struct aesthetics in theatre through strong visual images and toured in cities around the world such as Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Tokyo, Singapore, Taipei, Berlin, Brussels, Krakow, Milan. Woo's theatre works explore subjects as wide range as literature, history, current political affairs, architecture, and religion. His recent productions include HK: A Theatre of Life and Death, Bach is Heart Sutra, Hua-Yen Sutra, 1587, A Year of No Significance, Eighteen Springs, East Wing West Wing Series, Tang Xianzu's Dream on Dreams, A Tale of the Forbidden City, Multi-media Architectural Music Theatre Series - The Life and Times of Louis I. Kahn, and Looking for Mies. In charge of multimedia stage design, Woo cooperated with various Chinese theatrical masters, namely, Stan Lai, Edward Lam, Meng Jing-hui and more.

In 2009, Woo initiated and curated Architecture is Art Festival, the first of its kind themed on architecture in Hong Kong. Through theatrical performances, exhibitions, talks, conferences and other art forms, the festival showed levels of knowledge, aesthetics and brought about critical thinking and discussions. Since 2017, Woo curated and designed the Z Innovation Lab that focused on integrating the latest stage technology and innovative ideas.

In 2012, Mathias with Looking for Mies was awarded by the Hong Kong Design Centre DFA Merit Award. In 2013, Woo was award-ed the Arts and Cultural Figure of the Year in Shenzhen and Hong Kong Lifestyle Award by Southern Metropolitan Daily. His work The Architecture of The City has received DFA Design for Asia Awards 2018 – Silver Award and Silver A' Design Award in Performing Arts, Style and Scenery Design Category in 2019. With Z Innovation Lab 2019, he has also received the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2020.

Mathias Woo

Venerable Sik Tsang-chit

Creative Consultant

Born in Hong Kong, Venerable Sik Tsang Chit was ordained at Fat Yu Ching Seh Buddhist Monastery in 1993. In 1994, he received the full precepts at Wanfo Temple in Central Taiwan. He graduated from the Department of Philosophy of the Hong Kong Buddhist College, as well as the Yuen Kuang Buddhist College in Taiwan.

Yu Yat Yiu

Music Director

Yu Yat-yiu graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a major in Geography and a minor in Music. He has been a song-writer, author of lyrics, arranger and record producer for Canto- and Mando-pop music since 1996. He made his debut with a song he wrote for Miriam Yeung titled "Goodbye, Ni-chōme". In 1999, he joined Anthony Wong and a few other music-makers, to become one of the founders of indie music production label ‘People Mountain People Sea’. Artists he has collaborated with include Cass Pang, Anita Mui, Anthony Wong, Miriam Yeung, Gigi Leung and Alfred Hui. He has been nominated twice at the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Original Score he did for films titled "Hold You Tight" and "Prince of Tears" respectively. On the other hand, a Canto pop number "Wanna Be", which he co-produced with Arai Soichiro and Eman Lam, won “CASH Best Song Award” at CASH Golden Sail Music Awards 2012. Yu has published seven books on culinary culture since he started writing articles on food phenomenons in 2006. Other publications include various interviews he did with influential music-makers in Hong Kong. He is a regular contributor and columnist in local media such as MilkX and am730.

Cedric Chan

Music Director

Cedric joined Zuni in 1998 and participated in various projects’ creation, performance, coordination, include Gayamyan Romantic HK the 80s Concert, East Wing West Wing series, 1587, A Year of No Significance, Three-letter Opera, Hua-yen Sutra, Remembrance of Karaoke Past, Railway is Like a Long, Winding Recollection, Gayamyan Sings “Hong Kong Song Book – Little Rascals” Night Club; co-directed Children Anime Musical The Magic Flute, The Magic Flute Playground and Bauhaus Manifesto. Cedric co-founded local band Gayamyan in 2000. The band released its debut album in 2002 and participated in several music publications for East Wing West Wing, includes East Wing West Wing Original Soundtrack Collection 2003-2013. Cedric released his solo debut EP Crazy for Tutorials in 2006. Cedric is also a lyricist for local pop music. He has written lyrics for singers including Anthony Wong, Gigi Leung, Joey Yung, HOCC, Miriam Yeung, Andy Hui, at17, Pong Nan, etc.

Performer

David Yeung is one of the founding members of Zuni Icosahedron, having participated in the creation of and performed in plenty of the group’s works, including One Hundred Years of Solitude and Vanity Fair. His recent performances are Hua-Yen Sutra, 1587, A Year of No Significance, God Came to China, the children’s cartoon musical, The Magic Flute, STEAM - The Four Great Inventions, East Wing West Wing, and Danny Yung Experimental Theatre productions, Tears of Barren Hill and Flee by Night.

Zachary Pink YUNG

Performer

2022 Zuni Young Fellow (Performance) full-time actor

Graduated from School of Drama of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (Major in Acting). He was Awarded The Society of APA Local Scholarships, HSBC HKAPA Mainland China Study Programme (The HongKong Bank Foundation) and The Outstanding Actor Award by “Order” in 2014-15.

School Productions: “Macbeth”, “A Streetcar Named Desire”, “80K”.

He participated in Zuni’s performances, including, “Hua-yen Buddhaverse” and “Soundscape Magic Flute” in 2022; “HK: A Theatre of Life and Death” in 2021.

He was also engaged in “Josie and The Uni Boys + The Flash Back Now Party”, ViuTV's “King Maker Ⅲ”, etc.

Recently, Zachary is actively involved in theatre performances, film and television, advertisement and dubbing.

TroVessional

Naamyam Composition

TroVessional is a Cantonese Music Band formed by students and alumni from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and has been supervised by Professor Yu Qi Wei. The band often builds up from the foundations of traditional canton music to seek for innovation and creativity. The band members have different musical backgrounds such as Cantonese opera, Namyaam (Cantonese Narrative Singing), Cantonese flute and many more.

Trovessional has participated in numerous music events, performances, and competitions to promote Cantonese music culture. These events include:
